Meet Dr. Edward W Jernigan
DentureCare and Implant Solutions – Rocky Mount NC
Hello…I am Dr. Edward Jernigan. I grew up in the eastern North Carolina town of Goldsboro where I played sports, hunted and fished, and pretty much had a charmed small town life. I have been a lifelong surfer despite the fact that consistent surf is hard to find in my hometown break of Atlantic Beach, NC. Waiting for waves taught me great lessons in patience.
I graduated from University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill with degrees in Chemistry (’76) and a Doctor of Dental Surgery (1981). I did a one year General Practice Residency at the East Carolina School of Medicine after which I bought my first practice out on the far reaching frontier of “Downeast” Carteret County…”hoi toider” country…in Sea Level, NC (aptly named).During this time I started a part-time job with a practice in Kinston where I discovered that I absolutely loved working with denture patients. I joined them full-time to open their Wilmington office before becoming a partner with them in Durham in 1985. The founders, George Edwards and Don Henson, were awesome to work with and great mentors. In 1989, DentureCare Solutions opened in the current Rocky Mount location. From 1990-1995, along with a partner, we opened 14 DentureCare affiliated practices in 6 states. We provided management support services to these practices out of Raleigh, NC. After 6 years of this, I longed to return to wet hand dentistry and treating patients and I returned to the original DentureCare Solutions office in Rocky Mount. We have strived to provide compassionate and nonjudgmental solutions for those who need dentures ever since then.
Today, dental implants have become the definitive solution for those who have lost many to all of their natural teeth. More than any other treatment, they help to restore the ability to eat, laugh and sing again. More than anything they help to restore the confidence in living a fuller and more meaningful life. Claims are they help folks to live longer because they improve nutrition and, even more importantly, help to restore social interactions that heretofore denture wearers may shy away from. I have become a great believer in the potential of dental implants to help restore losses that are incurred when we lose our natural teeth.
I was so pleased when my son, Joc Jernigan, stated an interest in joining the practice during his Senior year of dental school at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. Even more exciting was the passion he began to show toward implant dentistry. He asked me to buy him what is considered by many to be the bible of dental implantology by Dr Carl Misch. I asked him if he really planned to read it. True to his affirmative answer, he read it like a best selling novel …cover to cover… in no time. Since then he has read many TEXTBOOKS (textbooks mind you) on the subject. He has also taken advantage of my offer to send him to learn from some of the top implant clinicians in the world through various CE symposiums. Less than 14 months out of school he has completed close to 600 hours of post graduate education in dental implants. I am inspired by his passion and effort. It is infectious!
I feel blessed to be part of the wonderful profession of dentistry. I have loved giving people back their smile and the ability to eat and laugh again. I feel fortunate to have my son join me in the practice. I am beyond excited, that with his arrival, we can take what I have been doing for 25 years here in Rocky Mount, to an even higher level through dental implants.
My hobbies center around my outstanding wife of 33 years , Dixie, and my 3 sons, Edward , Joc , and Jordan . We love to go to the beach and fish and surf and just get out on the boat and go to Cape Lookout…the most beautiful place on earth. I love studying God’s Word and reading magazines about my beloved South. I have been a member of the American Dental Association and the North Carolina Dental Society since 1982.
